Metadata is data that provides information about other data. It describes key properties and features of digital content and helps organize, categorize, and optimize access to it. In the digital world, especially in marketing and SEO, metadata is crucial for improving the discoverability and structure of content. 

Types of Metadata

  1. Descriptive Metadata: These metadata describe the content of a file or webpage, making it easier to understand and search through. Examples include: title, author, keywords
  2. Structural Metadata: These metadata indicate the relationships between different parts of a resource, such as the links between pages on a website. 
  3. Administrative Metadata: These metadata handle rights and access control, defining who can access the data and how it can be used. 

Metadata in SEO

In the context of SEO, metadata is essential for correctly indexing webpages and improving their visibility in search results. Important metadata for SEO includes: 

  1. Meta Title: A short text that describes the content of the page and appears as the title in search results. It should include relevant keywords and ideally be between 50 to 60 characters long. 
  2. Meta Description: A brief summary of the page content, which also appears in search results. It should be around 150 to 160 characters long and should engage the reader. 
  3. Alt Tags: These metadata describe images on webpages and help improve search engine indexing. Alt tags are especially important for accessibility and for helping search engines understand images.
