Attention Metrics
Attention Metrics explained
Ask where each figure comes from: what was actually observed, what was projected from a sample and what was modelled? Gaze observed in a study differs from estimated attention for delivered ads. The unit, measurement duration, environment covered and target population must also be clear.
The final IAB and MRC Attention Measurement Guidelines, published in November 2025, provide a shared methodological framework. They do not automatically make different provider scores interchangeable. Comparisons require appropriate definitions, formats, measurement conditions and traceable limits.
Attention is a possible intermediate step, not standalone proof of sales or brand impact. A striking design might attract looks while the important information goes unnoticed. Connect the investigation to the specific message and an appropriate check of understanding or recall.
In Creative Engineering, such examination can improve design: what should be noticed first? Is the brand correctly identified? Is the offering understandable? Formulate these questions before testing and examine variants under comparable conditions. More attention is useful only when it serves the task and the user experience.
Examples
Hypothetical application
A team tests two ads in the same study. Variant A draws early looks to the illustration, while participants subsequently struggle to describe the offering clearly. The team changes the hierarchy and tests again. Gaze data helps with diagnosis; it does not establish additional sales.
Key Points
- Visibly distinguish observed from modelled figures.
- Check the method, unit and comparison conditions.
- Connect attention with understanding and the communication task.
Practical application
Choose a clear design question and a suitable measurement method. Ask for an explanation of observed data, modelled elements and limits. Connect findings with comprehension questions and derive a specific change that can be tested again.
Useful measures
Method transparency
Observation, estimation, scale and the population covered are traceable.
Message understanding
Separately examine what participants took away from the communication.
Design learning
Document a specific change and its subsequent examination.
Common mistakes
- Interpreting long exposure as certain understanding.
- Presenting modelled estimates as direct observations of every person.
- Optimising a score while neglecting the message or user experience.

Frequently Asked Questions about Attention Metrics
No. Viewability describes a technical opportunity to see an ad. Whether and how a person perceives it requires a different investigation or an explicitly labelled estimate.
Only if definitions, scales, data and conditions are sufficiently comparable. Matching numbers or similar product names are not enough.
The specific question, group studied, method and analysis. Also clarify which data is collected, how participants are informed and which requirements apply to the intended use.
