CDP (Customer Data Platform)
CDP (Customer Data Platform) explained
When orders, customer accounts and service contacts are separate, a CDP can connect permitted information for a specific task. The CDP Institute emphasises persistent customer records and access for other applications. This need not place all raw data in a new database: existing storage and external services can be incorporated, depending on the architecture.
What belongs together is crucial. A matching identifier may refer to an account, device or household. It does not always prove that records concern the same person. Document reliable matching rules and the treatment of uncertainty. Incorrectly combined profiles should be reviewable and separable; missing information can remain missing.
Making a profile available and using it are separate steps. A destination may require different fields, update intervals or permissions. Hashed email addresses are not anonymous merely because they are hashed. For personal data, check purpose, lawful basis and permitted access. A CDP does not replace those decisions or automatically make information current and error-free.
Creative Engineering starts with the experience to improve: a clear service handover, for example, instead of repeated data entry. The technical connection follows that task. We take responsibility for the concept and quality. Assess correct matching and working handovers alongside integration, operation, data maintenance and the cost of connected systems.
Examples
Hypothetical application
A retailer wants to display the relevant order status during a service enquiry. A test connects permitted accounts and orders. The team also checks shared accounts, duplicate records and deleted entries. The workflow expands only once the handover works transparently.
Key Points
- Unified data need traceable matching rules.
- Combining records provides neither complete knowledge nor permission to use them.
- Assess value through a specific working handover.
Practical application
Describe one data handover, including its source, identity rule, required fields and destination. Test normal cases, incorrect matches and updates before expanding scope.
Useful measures
Matching quality
Check confirmed correct and incorrect connections in suitable samples.
Update delay
Measure time from a relevant change to the correct state at the destination.
Total operating cost
Include integration, licensing, maintenance, review and connected services.
Common mistakes
- Combining all data without a justified task.
- Automatically equating an identical identifier with one individual.
- Checking import while overlooking actual use.

Frequently Asked Questions about CDP (Customer Data Platform)
Not necessarily. CRM functions often concern relationship management and operational workflows. A CDP focuses on usable customer records across systems; individual products may combine functions.
No. Check the entire journey from source to actual use. Fast ingestion alone does not guarantee immediate updates at the destination.
No. Incorrect identifiers, shared accounts and uncertain matches can introduce errors. Review and correction belong in the data model.
