DSA Ad Repository
DSA Ad Repository explained
An archive can show which messages and product offers appeared during a period. Article 39 requires information including , the party on whose behalf the ad runs, a different payer where applicable, display period, main parameters and recipient . It must not publish personal-data records of the people shown the advertisements.
Required availability covers the display period and one year after the last presentation. Removed advertisements have special rules. Check the period, search behaviour and documented coverage of a particular service. An empty search does not necessarily mean a campaign never existed. The DSA concerns services and recipients in the Union; nationality is not a general criterion for searching or applying it.
A long run can have many explanations. It reveals neither the budget nor whether the ad produced profitable sales. Audience parameters and reach also do not reveal an entire strategy. Separate observed patterns from hypotheses about success. The archive is not permission to copy others’ creative work or a substitute for your own effectiveness testing.
Creative Engineering uses market observation to sharpen a distinctive communication idea. We take responsibility for the concept and quality. Start with a specific question, record filters and retrieval date, and compare appropriate periods. AI can organise findings but should not fill gaps with supposed competitor intentions. Assess the contribution to a decision rather than merely counting collected ads.
Examples
Hypothetical application
A team investigates how companies in a product category communicate repairability. It records the archive, period and search terms and organises observed messages. It develops its own substantiated proposition and tests it separately; competitor ad duration is not treated as sales evidence.
Key Points
- Consider service-specific archives and their coverage.
- Distinguish observed advertising from presumed effect.
- Document research traceably and test your own claims.
Practical application
Choose a market question and document relevant services, search terms and periods. Use findings for testable hypotheses and your own creative response.
Useful measures
Traceable research
Record sources, retrieval date, query parameters and limits alongside findings.
Reasoned hypotheses
Distinguish interpretation from directly observed ad characteristics.
Evaluated decision value
Document which decision arose from the research and how it was subsequently tested.
Common mistakes
- Treating a long display period as proof of profitable advertising.
- Assuming one archive covers the whole market.
- Adopting observed messages as a market trend or usage permission without further assessment.
Sources and context
- EUR-Lex: Digital Services Act, Artikel 33 und 39
Basis for designated very large services and advertising repositories, not a performance database.
- European Commission: Designated VLOPs and VLOSEs
Official directory of designated services and supervision.
