      Halo Effect (Marketing)

The halo effect describes a transfer of evaluation: a salient positive impression influences judgements of further attributes. In marketing, convincing design may shape expectations of product quality. This should be distinguished from measurable additional sales of other products, which are also sometimes described as a halo.

      Halo Effect (Marketing) explained

Well-designed packaging makes a new product appear reliable. That does not establish that it is actually more durable. This distinction makes the concept useful: perception can transfer from one attribute to another without separate experience. The APA’s psychological definition describes rating bias; it is not evidence that every good strengthens the entire range.

For brand work, identify which attribute might transfer to which other object. Is the source brand recognised? Is the connection between products known? Common corporate ownership alone does not create a recognised relationship in customers’ minds. Frame the expected transfer as a hypothesis and specify the outcome: quality judgement, trust, consideration or actual purchase.

A more favourable rating and additional sales are different outcomes. A before-and-after increase may also reflect price, seasonality, distribution or parallel activity. Test possible transfer with suitable comparison groups and separate questions about the products or attributes concerned. Negative impressions can also affect further judgements; investigate direction and strength instead of assuming them.

Creative Engineering connects a recognisable brand idea with a clear impact hypothesis. We take responsibility for the concept and quality. AI can prepare comparison variants; positive model judgements do not replace real people’s responses. Establish what the design actually communicates and how people identify the brand. Do not imply unsupported quality attributes or count expected transfer as a marketing-budget saving in advance.

      Examples

      Hypothetical application

A manufacturer tests two packaging designs for a new product. It measures liking, and expected durability separately. The team then checks whether the design creates expectations supported by the product’s actual characteristics.

      Key Points

      • Distinguish transferred perception from an established product attribute.
      • Frame expected spillover as a specific hypothesis.
      • Measure judgement, purchase intention and incremental sales separately.

      Practical application

Specify the initial impression, expected transfer and outcome. Test whether the perceives the connection, then assess perception and business impact with suitable methods for each.

      Useful measures

      Brand identification

Check which source and products the audience associates with the content.

      Transferred judgement

Measure a predefined attribute separately under suitable comparison conditions.

      Incremental sales

Evaluate possible business impact with its own comparison, uncertainty and relevant costs.

      Common mistakes

      • Treating a favourable design judgement as proof of technical quality.
      • Equating common corporate ownership with a recognised brand relationship.
      • Attributing every simultaneous sales increase to the campaign.
