    Media Quality Score

A media quality score combines selected quality characteristics of ad placements into a single value. The name alone defines neither the included characteristics nor their weighting. Depending on the provider or analysis, inputs may include technical viewability, detected invalid traffic and the suitability of the advertising environment.

    Media Quality Score explained

Ask how the score is calculated before using it for planning. Which characteristics are measured? Which are estimated? How are weights, scale and exclusions determined? A composite figure can provide orientation but does not replace examining its components.

Viewability describes a technical opportunity to see an ad, not demonstrated attention. Brand safety concerns avoiding generally unsuitable environments; brand suitability additionally considers a particular brand’s context. A seemingly good environment may fit different tasks differently.

Check measurement coverage: which delivered ads could actually be assessed? Missing data does not establish good quality. A favourable overall figure can also conceal a problem in one dimension. Specify which requirements must be met individually instead of averaging everything together.

A high score guarantees neither risk-free placements nor impact. Assess delivery quality, contextual fit and campaign outcomes as connected but different questions. When a figure changes, also investigate the method and inventory mix. A new measurement provider can produce different numbers without actual placements becoming better or worse.

    Examples

    Hypothetical application

A team compares two placement groups with similarly high overall scores. In one group, however, more delivery cannot be measured and individual environments do not fit the brand. The team examines these findings separately and adjusts the selection. The average alone would not have justified the decision sufficiently.

    Key Points

    • Disclose the formula, scale, components and measurement coverage.
    • Examine technical quality separately from brand-specific fit.
    • Do not treat overall scores as guarantees of safety or impact.

    Practical application

Define quality requirements for the specific brand and task. Examine score components and data coverage before use. Discuss deviations with responsible people and check whether intended changes were actually implemented.

    Useful measures

    Measurement coverage

Show the assessable share and limits of the underlying data.

    Individual requirements

Check relevant quality characteristics independently of the overall figure.

    Correction checks

Document problematic placements and verify agreed changes.

    Common mistakes

    • Presenting a provider metric as a universal standard.
    • Equating unknown quality with good quality.
    • Concealing critical individual findings behind a high average.
