    Zero-Party Data

Zero-party data means information people deliberately tell an organisation, such as topic preferences or details of a solution they need. The marketing term emphasises active disclosure. It is not a separate legal category of personal data and guarantees neither an answer’s accuracy nor permission for every subsequent use.

    Zero-Party Data explained

A direct question may clarify more than an from clicks: which product size is needed? What information does someone want? Forrester describes as intentionally provided information. Inferred interests, by contrast, result from interpretation. Keep the two distinguishable in the data. A stated preference is not an observed action.

The distinction from first-party data is not absolute. First party describes the direct relationship with the collecting organisation; zero party emphasises that a person explicitly declares something. An answer in your customer account can fit both descriptions. Information also has a time and context: a gift preference need not be an enduring personal interest.

Ask only for what the stated task needs. Explain the benefit and allow optional questions to be skipped and answers to be changed later. Under the GDPR, processing personal data requires an appropriate purpose and lawful basis. Completing an interests field is therefore not blanket permission for advertising. Even a voluntary answer can be incomplete, misunderstood or subsequently outdated.

Creative Engineering connects a good question with a useful response: a stated task can guide more relevant advice. AI can structure answers; it must not mix declared and inferred interests. Examples

    Hypothetical application

A furniture shop’s optional advice form asks whether a table is intended for a small or large room. The answer guides that enquiry. It does not automatically become a permanent household profile. The team tests whether people understand the question and available choices.

    Key Points

    • Distinguish deliberately shared information from inferred interests.
    • Consider timing, purpose and the ability to change an answer.
    • Do not equate disclosure with accuracy or unrestricted permission.

    Practical application

Choose a concrete advisory question, test its wording and define how the answer will be used, corrected and removed.

    Useful measures

    Clarity

Check whether people understand the question and choices as intended.

    Relevance of advice

Assess whether the result actually reflects the stated task.

    Maintenance effort

Include review, updates and technical care of the information.

    Common mistakes

    • Turning one answer into a permanent personality profile.
    • Collecting more fields than the task needs.
    • Treating answer volume as proof of better advice.
