Google AI search reports: Measuring visibility without inventing leads

New AI reports can inform priorities. They do not replace complete click or business-outcome measurement.
Google Generative AI Performance Reports: What CMOs Can Actually Measure
Verified as of October 17, 2026. Google announced new reports for visibility in features on June 3, 2026. Its updated announcement and help documentation state that the worldwide rollout was completed on August 31, 2026. This gives the discussion about AI visibility a firmer evidence base. It does not suddenly reveal the complete journey from an AI answer to a signed contract. The meaningful improvement is narrower: Google now provides dedicated views of impressions within specified generative features. Turning those views into a universal AI revenue report would overstate the data from the first presentation.
For marketing leadership, that narrower improvement still matters. Teams previously often relied on observing public search results and drawing tentative conclusions about their own presence. They can now use an additional perspective on their website. That perspective does not replace , CRM records, sales feedback, or well-designed experiments. It helps you ask better questions: Which appears? In which countries? On which devices? Which observations justify a focused investigation rather than an immediate budget increase or a large content production programme?
What Google Announced and What Is Now Available
The official announcement describes separate reports for Search and Discover. The June initially involved a subset of websites; the subsequent update identifies August 31 as the worldwide rollout date. These statements describe different stages rather than conflicting timelines. In your internal documentation, distinguish the announcement, initial access, and completed rollout. Otherwise, a June date can accidentally become an assumed starting point for a fully comparable series across every property.
According to the current help documentation, the Search report covers and AI Mode. Generative features in Discover have their own report. Google does not describe coverage of every AI service. You are therefore not automatically measuring Gemini, third-party answer engines, or every mention of your brand. Experiments in Search Labs are also excluded. The Google Generative AI Performance Report glossary provides a useful explanation of the terminology. For decisions, the documented scope matters more than the broader meaning that an attractive title might suggest to an audience unfamiliar with the underlying measurement rules.
Impressions Are Not Complete Customer Journeys
In the Search report, impressions describe how often links to your website were shown in supported generative search features. The main analysis combines this metric with pages, countries, devices, and time periods. You can investigate whether particular appears more often and whether its distribution changes. You cannot infer that a specific person understood an answer, trusted your brand, or subsequently requested a proposal. An impression is a recorded visibility observation under the relevant counting rules. It is not verified business value, a measurement of individual attention, or evidence that the person was ready to purchase your service.
Likewise, do not present the report as a complete solution for clicks, conversions, or . Google is providing a dedicated view of impressions. The documentation does not establish an end-to-end connection between an individual generative appearance and a closed CRM deal. Even when organic enquiries increase at the same time, the contribution of individual touchpoints remains unresolved. That is a necessary boundary of the analysis, not a failure by your team. Good management reporting places the limitation alongside the metric rather than burying it in a footnote that nobody remembers during the next budget discussion.
Making Pages, Countries, and Devices Useful
The pages view helps identify URLs appearing in generative search features. Google describes the final linked URL after redirects, while most performance data is assigned to the canonical URL, as in the regular performance report. Check canonical settings and redirects before interpreting a missing URL as a failure. An updated page may be represented under another canonical address. A practical page inventory should include its topic, intended , language, owner, and business purpose.
Countries help you compare visibility with your actual market. International impressions are not automatically more valuable to a regional provider than a smaller number of relevant appearances in its service area. The Search device dimension distinguishes desktop, tablet, and mobile. It can prompt a closer review of mobile and contact journeys. It does not establish that a particular device generates better leads. That requires additional information collected lawfully and interpreted carefully. Use dimensions to focus investigations, not as a shortcut from visibility to claims about purchase intent, available budget, or the eventual value of a contract.
Discover Is a Separate Context
Do not treat Discover as another tab describing the same search situation. Its help page defines an impression around a link being scrolled into view, for example as a card or within a carousel. Only one impression is counted per result per session; scrolling away and back does not create unlimited additional impressions. The documented dimensions are pages, countries, and dates. Do not transfer the Search device breakdown to Discover without evidence. These differences alone justify separate sections and clear labels, even when both reports support the same broader strategic discussion about generative visibility and investment.
Page assignment also needs attention. Discover identifies the canonical source page for the information shown, not necessarily the page on which someone lands after clicking. If that canonical URL is outside the property, the alternative URL will not appear in that property's table, according to Google. Discover also aggregates by page. Two generative results from the same property in one Discover list can therefore each count. Comparing Search and Discover without their definitions risks misleading performance rankings. Start with changes within each report and explain the different counting methods before making cross-context claims or constructing a combined success indicator.
Avoid Double Counting and Understand Aggregation
Google explicitly states that this data is already included in the overall performance report. The dedicated reports offer another perspective, not an extra block of . Adding AI impressions to an encompassing total counts included data again. For Search, the help documentation points to data from the Web search type in the Search results performance report. Before calculating a share, align the date range, property, filters, and aggregation. A ratio based on mismatched populations can look precise while remaining methodologically wrong. Label the denominator and preserve the calculation logic so colleagues can review it when the is reused.
The Search chart is aggregated by property by default. If two results from the same site appear in a generative search feature, they count as one impression in the chart total. Applying a URL filter changes the aggregation. In the table, pages are grouped at page level, while countries, devices, and dates are aggregated by property. Chart and table totals can consequently differ without a tracking failure. Ask your team to check these rules before escalating apparent data loss.
A Missing Report Does Not Prove Invisibility
If the Search report is absent, Google says the usual reason is insufficient impressions in the relevant generative features. Exclusions can also matter. Neither explanation establishes that the website has never appeared. An absent report initially means there is no available reporting view with sufficient information. Check the correct property, its configuration, relevant URLs, and possible restrictions. Record the status as insufficient evidence rather than a measured zero. For smaller B2B websites, that distinction prevents sparse data from becoming false strategic certainty or triggering unnecessary technical projects before anyone has established the nature of the problem.
The Discover help page retains general language about gradual availability alongside the dated note confirming worldwide rollout. Do not treat that editorial inconsistency as evidence that the worldwide rollout is still continuing. Use the dated update for the rollout status, then investigate impression volume and the circumstances of the individual property. Another important detail concerns exports: values shown as unavailable symbols in the interface can become zeros in downloaded data. Preserve the distinction between unavailable and measured zero. Otherwise, a spreadsheet can quietly transform a missing observation into a confident assertion that visibility did not exist.
A CMO Dashboard Needs Three Distinct Layers
The first layer describes visibility: impressions in the named report, relevant pages, target countries, and devices for Search. The second describes observable website behaviour, such as use of a service page or contact form, where measurement is permitted. The third describes business outcomes: qualified enquiries, accepted opportunities, and closed deals in the CRM. These layers can sit alongside one another without claiming an uninterrupted identity chain between them. Our approach to data and measurement planning starts with this distinction: establish definitions first, then connect information only to the extent that the available evidence supports the connection.
Every tile should answer a decision question. For visibility, that might be which strategically important pages deserve investigation. For quality, it might be which enquiries match your offer, service region, and minimum project requirements. For revenue, it is which opportunities actually progress. Include the source, freshness, filters, and known limitations. Avoid a single AI revenue figure if its allocation depends on untested assumptions. A small dashboard with honest boundaries is more useful for budget decisions than an elaborate display whose apparent precision cannot be explained by either the data team or the sales organisation.
Prioritise Lead Quality, Not Visibility at Any Cost
Local B2B businesses need a particularly close connection between and the real offer. A technical service provider might receive many impressions for broad definitions without winning suitable projects. Conversely, a specialised service page can be commercially important despite modest visibility. Agree with sales on what makes an enquiry valuable: a relevant industry, a deliverable service, an accessible location, and an identifiable need. Those criteria are not metrics supplied by Google's report. They form a separate evaluation framework for testing whether your content priorities make business sense rather than merely producing a more impressive visibility chart.
A useful assignment is therefore not simply to increase AI impressions. It is to answer the most important unresolved customer questions on prioritised service pages. Ask sales and service teams what prospects regularly struggle to understand. Relevant information might include prerequisites, limitations, project stages, responsible contacts, and practical selection criteria. If visibility and qualified enquiries subsequently improve together, that is an interesting pattern, not proof of causation. Record concurrent campaigns, events, price changes, and sales activity as possible influences. This keeps the team focused on learning rather than assigning every favourable movement to whichever initiative currently has the strongest internal sponsor.
Useful Content and Technical Fundamentals
Usefulness does not begin with a supposed secret formula for AI citations. A page should answer a genuine question clearly and make important claims verifiable. Provide concrete descriptions, identifiable authorship where appropriate, current service information, and credible supporting sources. For local B2B offers, real responsibilities and geographic boundaries are more helpful than interchangeable text for countless cities. Include examples only when they are accurate and do not imply invented customer successes. The report can identify pages that appear; it does not automatically assess technical accuracy, clarity, or usefulness to someone evaluating a purchase.
Technical fundamentals still include accessible URLs, correct status codes, meaningful internal links, coherent canonicals, and consistent . If you use server-side rendering, check whether essential information is present in the delivered HTML and remains after hydration. Test mobile presentation and working contact paths too. SSR is neither a guaranteed ticket into nor independent proof of improved visibility. It is one implementation option whose value depends on the actual problem. Our performance perspective therefore connects accessibility, speed, and usability rather than treating a single architectural choice as a ranking promise or a substitute for useful information.
Design Experiments Instead of Retrospective Success Stories
Write a testable hypothesis before making a change. For example, adding missing decision criteria to a selected group of technical service pages might improve the relevance of their documented visibility. Define target pages, comparison pages, observation windows, and decision rules in advance. The comparison group should be reasonably similar in topic, starting conditions, and seasonality. This does not automatically make the study randomised, but it improves interpretability. Record publication dates, technical changes, and parallel marketing activity. Avoid simultaneously rebuilding the entire website, changing the contact form, and restructuring campaigns if you later want to understand which intervention plausibly contributed.
Alongside impressions, monitor available signals of use and quality without assigning an individual appearance to a closed deal. Compare equal periods and consider weekday differences, seasonal demand, and incomplete recent data. Search marks preliminary values, which can still change. When volumes are low, a longer observation window is often more useful than frequent changes of direction. Report not only whether a metric rose or fell, but also how robust the pattern appears and what alternative explanations remain. An inconclusive result can still be valuable if it prevents a premature investment or reveals weaknesses in the measurement plan.
Attribution, Consent, and Limits on Connecting Data
Someone may see a generative answer, return directly later, and enquire only after a conversation. Others switch devices or decline cookies. The impression data described here cannot reconstruct these journeys completely. Missing consent or identifiers is not an invitation to recognise people through questionable methods. Plan measurement with data minimisation and legal compliance in mind. Consult the responsible privacy specialists about permitted events, retention periods, and connections.
Optional questions during an enquiry can add useful context: How did you hear about us? Which information helped your decision? Such answers remain dependent on memory and are not a replacement for controlled impact measurement. Label self-reported information, observed website events, and modelled allocations separately. Where evidence is missing, say so. Other search environments can provide a useful strategic comparison; our article on TikTok Search Ads for brands broadens that perspective. Do not automatically transfer its platform logic or measurement capabilities to Google's generative search reports.
Practical Limits in Regular Reporting
The help pages reference the usual performance-report limitations, including a 1,000-row table limit. An export is therefore not permission to treat every detailed table as a complete inventory of all visibility. Document the time zone as well: dates use Pacific Time. That can affect comparisons with a CRM configured for Central European time. In Discover, daily values below a threshold may be omitted from the chart while remaining included in totals. Put these details in your team's data handbook so future analyses do not silently compare incompatible foundations or mistake a display limitation for a real change in behaviour.
A monthly review can follow a simple sequence: check data status, identify relevant changes, add commercial context, and agree on the next investigation. Assign an owner to each action. An anomaly without a responsible team remains a decorative chart. An intervention without a documented baseline is difficult to evaluate later. Separate observation, interpretation, and action in the presentation. This discipline prevents both exaggerated success claims and rushed reactions to short-term fluctuations. It does not make the report less interesting; it makes the report more reliable as a tool for prioritisation and cooperation between marketing, technology, and sales.
FAQs
Does the report show every AI mention of our brand?
No. The documented Search scope covers and AI Mode, while Discover has a separate report. These are recorded website-link impressions and the source-page information described in the documentation, not universal of every brand mention across all AI services. Search Labs experiments are excluded. Broader questions require other investigations with an explicitly defined scope.
Can we calculate revenue or conversion rates from it?
Not as reliable end-to-end AI attribution. The reports provide the visibility described above, not a complete connection to clicks, leads, and sales. You can examine business data alongside it and test hypotheses. Calculating a new from unrelated populations instead creates a metric without a dependable interpretation, even when the arithmetic itself is correct.
Does an absent report mean we are invisible?
No. Insufficient impressions can prevent the report from appearing. Check the property and possible exclusions, and distinguish unavailable information from a measured zero. A single manual search test also proves neither broad visibility nor complete invisibility across every user, country, and search situation. Treat it as one observation, not as a substitute for reporting coverage.
Should we add AI impressions to the overall total?
No. Google says the data is already included in the overall performance report. Use the dedicated view for analysis rather than as an additional reach block. Before calculating shares, align periods, filters, properties, and aggregation rules. Otherwise, even a formally correct calculation can communicate something the underlying evidence does not support.
What Now?
Treat these reports as a more precise visibility diagnostic, not finished proof of business impact. Your next move should be smaller and more testable than a sweeping AI strategy.
- Establish the reporting foundation: Separate Search and Discover, record the source date, and make aggregation rules visible in the .
- Prioritise commercial relevance: Agree on important service pages, target regions, and qualified- criteria with sales.
- Improve deliberately: Answer real customer questions and check factual support alongside technical accessibility.
- Experiment carefully: Document the baseline, comparison group, observation period, and alternative explanations in advance.
- Disclose measurement gaps: State consent limitations, missing data, and restricted attribution instead of implying false precision.
If you want to turn this into a practical measurement and action plan, get in touch to discuss the next steps. The goal is not to own the greatest number of charts. It is to make better decisions from clearly defined evidence.
