Sharp vs. Schrieber: Is This Marketing Feud Still Relevant?

Two schools of thought competing for supremacy in brand management. We analyze the debate.
The Ultimate Showdown
It was the ultimate showdown: Sharp vs. Schrieber. Two schools of thought dealing with the key factors for marketing-driven growth, both armed with data, vying for supremacy in brand management. But… the world is changing.
Sharp's Model: The Cognitive Miser
Marketing Professor Byron Sharp's Ehrenberg-Bass model has confronted us with a hard truth: Consumers aren't necessarily enthusiastic about a brand when they prefer it – they're basically "cognitive misers."
This means: We generally tend to make a decision that's good enough, that is, satisfying, rather than making the best decision. According to this analysis, we tend toward large, established brands – simply because it saves time and reduces the risk of being wrong.
The "inspiring power" of a brand, brand differentiation, and brand values are secondary. According to Sharp's school of thought, only factors like popularity, prominence, and visibility are responsible for success.
Schrieber's Model: The Growth Flywheel
In contrast, Jared Schrieber's "growth flywheel" is about understanding and leveraging the decisive moments in interaction with buyers, rather than focusing everything on new customer acquisition.
Creating special purchase occasions, considering cultural aspects, involving influencers, choosing the perfect timing for outreach, standing out from the competition – these are his weapons of choice.
Repeat buyers should be prioritized according to the market intelligence expert because they contribute disproportionately to revenue over time. This was shown by analyzing 25,000 brands.
The Question for the Future
We ask ourselves: In today's fast-paced, hyperconnected world, is it even necessary to choose a side anymore, or will Artificial Intelligence turn this entire debate on its head?
