Audience
Audience explained
Who should hear us, and who actually does? A may be intended for people with a particular need while a platform recognises or reaches only some of them. Good planning therefore starts with a clear selection rule and a question about whom it leaves out.
In an analytics tool, an audience might include recorded users who opened a product comparison. This is an observable event within the available data. It does not automatically reveal their reason for buying, budget or definite purchase intent. A device identifier is not a reliably identified person either.
Delivery adds further conditions. Is the group available in the chosen channel? What exclusions, overlaps and updates apply? An internal list is not automatically fully reachable on an advertising platform. Technical availability also does not replace checking whether the data may be used for the intended purpose.
Creative Engineering connects this selection with an appropriate idea. A useful product comparison needs different content from an entertaining brand film; both can interest the same audience. AI can prepare variants and hypotheses for analysis. We assess whether these produce clearer communication at a reasonable total cost through the actual result.
Examples
Hypothetical application
A tool supplier wants to explain which drill bit suits each material. It treats recorded visits to its comparison page as an analysis group. A test examines whether a new material guide makes selection easier. A page visit is treated as neither a definite buying intention nor an automatically usable advertising contact.
Key Points
- Distinguish intended, addressable and reached audiences.
- Document selection rules, data gaps and updates.
- Do not confuse observed behaviour with known motivations.
Practical application
Describe the in one sentence and record its selection criteria, data source, period and exclusions. Then check whether the planned communication fits the group and channel.
Useful measures
Group reached
Compare actual delivery with intended selection where data are available.
Overlap
Check multiple membership before adding reach figures.
Task success
Assess the intended action alongside quality and effort.
Common mistakes
- Presenting a saved audience as the entire market reached.
- Treating clicks as proof of personal motivations.
- Promising universal CPA, ROAS or minimum audience sizes.
Sources and context
- Google Analytics: Audience
Defines audiences as groups with specified attributes in Google Analytics; not a measure of the whole market.
Frequently Asked Questions about Audience
The terms overlap. Target audience emphasises intended communication; audience can also mean the public actually reached or a technical grouping. State the context.
