Commerce Media
Commerce Media explained
The shared basis is a connection to commercial data and offers, not a fixed stage of the purchase process. A may introduce a product or support a specific choice. can also appear outside a shop. A past transaction proves neither current purchase intent nor a complete understanding of a person.
Plan around the actual task rather than the label. Which demand and offer fit together? Where is the product available, what information does the audience need and which contact format is appropriate? Coordinate brand, media, sales and product data accordingly. A new budget category or extra technology service is not an end in itself.
Shared reporting must reveal differences before combining figures. Attribution windows, product scope, treatment of returns, currencies and cost definitions need to align. Duplicated outcomes must not be added as additional sales. With consistent data, aggregate ROAS is total revenue divided by total spend, not a revenue-share-weighted average of separate ROAS figures.
Commerce data does not eliminate measurement gaps or automatically remove dependence on cookies or consent. One platform may attribute sales, another model them or cover only part of the picture. Check actual access and limits of interpretation. What matters is the additional insight and economic contribution the setup provides for the task.
Examples
Hypothetical application
Two separate campaigns with comparable reporting each show €1,000 in attributed revenue, at media costs of €100 and €500. Combined ROAS is €2,000 divided by €600, approximately 3.33. This assumes consistent definitions without duplicated revenue. The figure still describes attributed revenue, not additional impact or profit.
Key Points
- Commerce media includes retail media and other commercial data environments.
- The task determines format and planning, not a rigid funnel stage.
- Shared reporting requires comparable definitions and correct aggregation.
Practical application
Define the task and the information actually needed. Select suitable offers and document data scope, measurement rules and costs. Combine outcomes only after resolving definitions and overlap.
Useful measures
Comparable revenue and cost
Use consistent definitions, currencies, periods and costs.
Additional contribution
Investigate additional outcomes with an appropriate comparison.
Data interpretability
Document coverage, modelling and remaining overlap.
Common mistakes
- Reducing commerce media to immediately purchase-ready people or one funnel stage.
- Promising cookie independence, complete identification or future-proofing.
- Averaging ROAS incorrectly or adding duplicated attributed revenue.
