    Connected TV (CTV)

Connected TV (CTV) refers to internet-connected television devices and consumption of digital content on them, for example through built-in apps or connected streaming devices. In marketing, CTV therefore describes a delivery environment. Available advertising and measurement depend on the provider, inventory and device.

    Connected TV (CTV) explained

An advert plays on a living-room television. One person may be watching, several may be watching, or nobody may be there. The large screen creates space for a strong story but does not provide a complete picture of the . IAB Tech Lab distinguishes OTT delivery from consumption on CTV devices. A streaming may therefore include other devices; check the environments actually purchased.

Before buying, establish the app or channel, country, format, delivery path and available evidence. CTV is not necessarily bought exclusively programmatically. Audience and household assignments depend on available data, permissions and methods. A household exposure does not establish that a particular person saw the advert or may be targeted again on another device. Do not assume complete cross-provider reach deduplication or frequency control.

A fully played advert does not prove attention. MRC measurement guidance discusses co-viewing, continuous play and potential delivery while a screen is switched off. Ask which cases the measurement service detects and which limitations remain in reporting. A QR code reveals only recorded responses through that route. Attributed purchases do not automatically establish advertising’s incremental effect; that needs an appropriate study design.

Creative Engineering connects a large-screen idea with readable, tested execution. We take responsibility for the concept and quality. Check text size, audio, captions and any QR code in realistic conditions. AI can prepare alternatives but replaces neither review of the advert nor checks on the purchased inventory. Assess creative quality, valid delivery and impact alongside production, media, data and measurement costs.

    Examples

    Hypothetical application

A regional provider plans a CTV pilot in selected streaming environments. It checks the device mix and regional coverage, tests the advert on a television and identifies household-measurement limits in its report. QR-code responses and a separately designed effectiveness study are evaluated separately.

    Key Points

    • Distinguish CTV devices, streaming content and the purchased offer.
    • Delivery and completion do not prove attention.
    • Clearly separate household, person and effectiveness measures.

    Practical application

Plan a limited pilot with explicitly described inventory. Test the advert on the actual screen and agree beforehand which claims the available measurements can support.

    Useful measures

    Valid delivery

Check devices, environments, invalid contacts and known measurement gaps.

    Reach and frequency

Identify the measured unit and limits relating to shared or repeated contacts.

    Incremental impact and full effort

Use suitable effectiveness evaluation and include media, creative, data and measurement costs.

    Common mistakes

    • Reporting smartphone streaming as CTV reach without separation.
    • Equating completed plays or household contacts with attentive individuals.
    • Inferring automatically better profitability from more precise targeting.
