Deep Link
Deep Link explained
The link should deliver the promise made at its starting point. Someone selecting a particular event expects its details and registration. Check not only whether an address technically responds, but whether , language and intended state are correct. A generic start screen can be the wrong destination despite a successful load.
On the web, a directly reachable subpage is often sufficient. App content needs appropriate association and handling. Android App Links and Apple Universal Links connect web addresses with apps. An ordinary web link or custom app link type does not automatically behave the same way.
Plan for an absent app. Apple documents opening the web address in a browser when a universal link’s app is not installed. Redirecting to a store and resuming particular content after installation are additional journeys. Do not promise them without appropriate implementation and testing.
A deep link creates a direct route, not complete measurement. Campaign parameters, consent, sign-in and later purchases raise separate questions. Creative Engineering connects the message with the actual destination journey. A link is useful when people arrive and can continue where they were told they would.
Examples
Hypothetical application
A newsletter links to registration for an event. The team tests the link in a browser, with the app installed and without it. The selected event remains after a required sign-in. If it is fully booked, an appropriate explanation and an understandable alternative are shown.
Key Points
- Define the particular destination and expected state.
- Test web and app behaviour separately.
- Plan for sign-in, missing apps and unavailable content.
- Distinguish linking from measurement.
Practical application
Test each entry through to the intended action. Include installed and absent apps, sign-in, language and that is no longer available.
Useful measures
Destination correctness
Check content, language and state against the originating promise.
Task continuation
Test the intended journey after sign-in or switching to an app.
Entry coverage
Document relevant devices, browsers, app states and unavailable destinations.
Common mistakes
- Treating every technically successful load as the correct destination.
- Equating app opening, store redirection and resumption after installation.
- Presenting deep links as a guarantee of complete attribution or fixed conversion gains.
Sources and context

Explains Android links, app association and testing; behaviour depends on factors including verification and user choice.
- Apple Developer: Allowing apps and websites to link to your content
Describes universal links and opening the website when the associated app is not installed.
Frequently Asked Questions about Deep Link
No. A web link can open a subpage directly without involving an app.
There is no general rule. An Apple universal link opens the web address if the app is not installed. Other redirects require corresponding implementation.
Not generally. Resuming after installation is a separate journey that must be technically supported and tested on relevant devices.
