    QR Code

A QR code is a two-dimensional, machine-readable code that can contain data such as a web address. In marketing, it can connect packaging, posters or brochures to digital content. Its value depends on a destination that fits the situation and remains available.

    QR Code explained

Packaging has limited space. A well-used can from it to relevant instructions. Ask what the person receives after scanning that helps them at that moment. A general homepage link will often serve this purpose less well than a specific answer.

With what is marketed as a “dynamic” QR code, the printed symbol stays the same. It usually contains an address whose redirect can later change. This creates a dependency on continued operation of that address. Establish who owns the domain, redirect and destination content over time.

Design must preserve readability. For regular QR codes, DENSO WAVE specifies a clear margin of four modules on every side. Also test the produced material with appropriate devices, distances and lighting. A screen preview does not prove that a small print on glossy packaging works.

A scan, page request and completed action are different events. A camera scan need not open a page; a logged request does not automatically identify a person or their exact location. Interpret measurement according to how it was collected. Creative Engineering connects design, useful destination content and a durable route.

    Examples

    Hypothetical application

A manufacturer adds a to device instructions, leading to the relevant assembly video. The team tests the finished print, includes a readable short address and checks the video and subtitles. It also specifies which instructions must remain available at that address after product changes.

    Key Points

    • Explain the benefit after scanning.
    • Test the print, redirect and destination together.
    • Do not equate requests with people or proven impact.

    Practical application

Define the destination and usage setting, test a production print and document long-term ownership of the address. Provide an alternative route.

    Useful measures

    Readability

Check successful requests from real material under defined conditions.

    Destination quality

Assess whether content clearly fulfils the promised task.

    Continued availability

Check addresses, redirects and appropriate content after the campaign ends.

    Common mistakes

    • Designing an attractive symbol without testing the print.
    • Using redirect services without assigning responsibility for their lifetime.
    • Presenting scan counts as exact people, location or revenue measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions about QR Code

The printed symbol stays the same. Usually, the redirect behind its encoded address can change; that infrastructure must remain operational.
