Ad Impression
Ad Impression explained
One person may be shown the same repeatedly. Impressions can then grow without a corresponding increase in people reached. Keep impressions, and frequency in separate columns. Simply adding reach from different platforms cannot resolve their overlap either.
Distinguish counted impressions, impressions measurable for viewability and impressions classified as viewable. The measurement environment sets the criteria. An unmeasurable impression is not automatically non-viewable. A viewability rate therefore needs a clear denominator.
Google Active View treats viewability as a technical opportunity to see an ad. Attention, understanding and recall are further questions. Avoid equating viewable impressions with demonstrated brand effects. A viewable CPM is initially a cost ratio, not evidence of effectiveness.
Plan around the communication task: which people should understand which offer, in what environment and with what contact distribution? Design and media work together when the message is legible and understandable in the actual booked format. Evaluation should then show whether suitable methods were used to examine the intended effect.
Examples
Hypothetical application
Two placements deliver equal impression counts. Viewability can only be measured for part of one placement. The team reports measurement coverage separately and compares cost, context and contact distribution. It does not declare a successful simply because its impression count is larger.
Key Points
- Impressions count displays rather than distinct people.
- Measurable, viewable and attended to are different statements.
- Report measurement coverage alongside the rate.
- Consider contact distribution and the communication objective.
Practical application
Record counting rules, format, measurement provider and period. Present impressions, measurement coverage, viewability rate and available data separately, with their limitations.
Useful measures
Impressions
Ad displays counted under documented rules.
Measurement coverage
The proportion of impressions whose viewability could be determined.
Contact distribution
Interpret available reach and frequency alongside the measurement method.
Common mistakes
- Equating video views with impressions.
- Treating unmeasurable contacts as non-viewable.
- Presenting a frequency or viewability rate as a universal guarantee of success.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ad Impression
No. One person may generate several impressions. Reach instead attempts to identify distinct people or identifiers reached within a defined measurement.
That does not follow. Technical viewability describes an opportunity for perception. Attention or recall requires a different investigation.
The chosen method could not determine its viewability. It should not automatically be classified as either viewable or non-viewable.
