    Funnel

A funnel is a model that divides a process into selected stages. In analytics, it shows how many recorded users or processes reach defined steps. It helps investigate transitions; it does not automatically explain drop-off reasons or represent every actual customer journey.

    Funnel explained

A form is started frequently but rarely submitted. A can reveal between which recorded steps people fail to progress. First, define the steps clearly: clicking “Submit” differs from an enquiry being saved successfully.

Before analysis, decide what is counted, in which order and within which period. Are you examining users, sessions or processes? Can other actions occur between steps? Compare only values with compatible counting rules. Otherwise, a different definition alone can appear to be an improvement or decline.

GA4, for example, distinguishes open and closed funnels. Recorded users can enter an open funnel at later stages; a closed funnel requires entry at step one. An open funnel still checks the defined sequence after entry. These settings affect the numbers and belong in the report explanation.

An unusual transition is a reason to investigate. Missing measurement events, a technical fault, a deliberate choice or a later completion can be different explanations. Creative Engineering connects diagnosis with a justified change to content or interaction. A better rate is convincing only when measurement and result quality also hold up.

    Examples

    Hypothetical application

In a hypothetical closed form , 200 recorded users start entering details. Of these, 120 the review step and 90 receive confirmed submission. With this counting method, the transition from review to confirmation is 90 ÷ 120 = 75 percent; the overall rate is 90 ÷ 200 = 45 percent. These illustrate calculation, not targets or evidence of a particular drop-off cause.

    Key Points

    • Define events, counting unit, sequence and period.
    • Distinguish attempted from confirmed completion.
    • Investigate unusual rates before deciding on action.

    Practical application

Start with a clear question and the few steps needed to answer it. Check measurement by completing the process end to end. Investigate unusual transitions and test a justified change.

    Useful measures

    Stage rate

Divide consistently counted people progressing by the appropriate starting group.

    Confirmed completions

Reconcile recorded completion events with actual outcomes.

    Time to the next step

Assess time with clear start/end definitions and a stated selection basis.

    Common mistakes

    • Counting clicks on a completion button as successful completions.
    • Comparing open and closed funnels without explanation.
    • Inferring revenue or efficiency gains from a visualisation alone.

    Frequently Asked Questions about Funnel

Funnel is the broader term. A marketing funnel organises tasks around awareness, consideration and purchase. An analytics funnel can examine a small process such as registration.
