    Generative UI

Generative UI describes interfaces in which generative AI helps determine the presentation or composition of controls. It can use prebuilt components. What matters is whether the resulting interface supports the task clearly and reliably.

    Generative UI explained

A product question may be better answered with a comparison table than a long text. A generative system can select and populate suitable components without programming each one from scratch. A2UI, for example, describes catalogs of defined components.

Design remains intentional work. The team decides which information must stay visible, which interactions make sense and how the brand and experience fit together. A valid component does not guarantee a useful composition.

Dynamic interfaces need dependable states. Inputs should not disappear unnoticed, errors need clear explanations and consequential actions must remain recognisable. Test keyboard access, focus, text enlargement and return paths on the variants actually generated.

For search-relevant information, also establish how people and search engines can reach it. A view generated only after an individual request is not automatically discoverable as a separate page. Start from a specific interaction need.

    Examples

    Hypothetical application

A product adviser answers a comparison question with a table of approved product data. A follow-up about use adds a relevant explanation. Existing selections and inputs remain available; missing information is shown rather than invented by the model.

    Key Points

    • Prebuilt components can support generative selection.
    • Assess data quality separately from presentation.
    • Test interaction on generated variants.
    • Provide dependable return paths and clear errors.

    Practical application

Choose a specific advice or information task. Define required , permitted components and a clear fallback. Test varied requests against real usage tasks before expanding the scope.

    Useful measures

    Task completion

Users achieve the defined goal with correct information.

    Comprehension

Users understand options and the consequences of their next action.

    Waiting and recovery effort

Time to a usable view and effort to recover from errors.

    Common mistakes

    • Incorrectly excluding prebuilt components from the definition.
    • Assuming valid layout means correct content.
    • Overlooking abandonment, lost inputs and focus changes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Generative UI

No. A design system can provide the components and rules within which the interface is generated.
