      Lead

A lead is a recorded contact with a person or company that could develop into a customer relationship. The strength of that interest depends on its origin and the available information. A new record is therefore not yet a qualified sales opportunity.

      From definition to delivery

Three short ways on: the matching service, a real project and a briefing you can take with you.

      Lead explained

A specific enquiry means something different from a newsletter subscription or an event contact. Record what the person actually requested or agreed to. A download may indicate professional interest without an upcoming purchase project. A useful record makes those differences visible rather than assigning purchase readiness to every contact.

Marketing and sales need shared criteria for handling leads. A marketing qualified lead (MQL) meets the agreed marketing requirements for handover. With a sales qualified lead (SQL), sales has assessed suitability as a potential customer. Exact distinctions vary by organisation; CRM stages can also be customised. An opportunity then describes a specific potential deal and is not automatically every SQL.

A score can help with prioritisation but cannot replace assessment. Individual page visits or opens are weak signals and can be technically distorted. Combine observed activity with relevant information about needs. Avoid rigid point thresholds without evaluation, and do not turn unknown details into confirmed facts.

Plan the next useful action and its owner: answer an enquiry, clarify a question or prepare an agreed meeting. Lead status and permission to make contact are separate information. A message concerning the requested service does not automatically authorise further advertising sequences. Record purpose, origin and consent where relevant; end unsuitable follow-up and keep records current.

      Examples

      Hypothetical application

An operations manager requests a demonstration of planning software. The team records her stated use case and requested response. A conversation then establishes whether a specific project exists. Someone else only downloads a guide and is not automatically counted as a sales opportunity.

      Key Points

      • Record the origin and the need actually expressed.
      • Define qualification stages together and test them against real conversations.
      • Keep handling status and contact permissions separate.

      Practical application

Define when you count a contact as a and which information justifies the next action. Assign ownership and feedback. Regularly check completed cases to understand whether qualification was useful.

      Useful measures

      Actionable contacts

Count distinct contacts with a clear origin and relevant enquiry.

      Qualification over time

Follow comparable intake cohorts to a defined assessment date.

      Reliable responses

Check whether agreed next steps were completed on time and recorded.

      Common mistakes

      • Treating a newsletter subscription, SQL and opportunity as equivalent.
      • Treating untested scores as established purchase intent.
      • Inferring contact permission from a CRM record.

      Frequently Asked Questions about Lead

No. Depending on the process, the term covers contacts with different levels of confirmed interest. Further information establishes whether needs, offer and timing fit.

No. They name different qualification stages, with specific criteria that marketing and sales must agree. A system default cannot replace that agreement.

No. A clear manual assessment may be sufficient for a manageable volume of enquiries. Scoring is useful when it reliably supports a specific prioritisation task.
