    Remarketing

Remarketing re-engages people who have previously encountered an offering through a website, app or customer relationship. The term is often used interchangeably with retargeting. An earlier interaction can provide a useful starting point; it establishes neither current purchase intent nor permission for every form of subsequent contact.

    Remarketing explained

Someone visited a product page and left. They may lack information, find the offer unsuitable or have already bought elsewhere. A further ad should therefore serve a plausible purpose, such as explaining relevant delivery information. Repetition and a discount alone do not fix an unsuitable offer. Define the trigger, time window and exclusions before committing spend.

Google Ads now calls previous remarketing audiences data segments or “your data”. Depending on the platform and campaign, website, app or customer information may be used. Not everyone can be recognised or reached. Segment rules, technical prerequisites and current platform restrictions must fit together. Dynamic product ads also require suitable, current product data; viewing a product earlier does not guarantee a particular ad will be shown.

In Germany, device storage or access under TDDDG section 25 and subsequent personal-data processing need separate assessment. First-party data, server-side transmission and hashed identifiers do not replace a valid basis. Marketing email is also subject to UWG section 7 and its limited exceptions. Implement withdrawal, objections and exclusions in the actual data and campaign flows. A privacy notice alone does not authorise arbitrary use.

Creative Engineering connects a relevant next message with reliable data and appropriate limits. We take responsibility for the concept and quality. AI can prepare variations; offers, consent signals and exclusions require checks. Observe repetition and complaints and use available frequency controls appropriate to the campaign type. A high attributed ROAS may include purchases that would have happened anyway. Assess incremental effect with a suitable comparison and include discount, media and operating costs.

    Examples

    Hypothetical application

A shop tests an ad explaining delivery information for a lawfully created segment. Completed purchases are excluded according to the available data. An appropriate comparison design aims to establish whether additional orders occur and whether their contribution remains positive after full costs.

    Key Points

    • Define a relevant next task rather than repetition alone.
    • Check technical reachability and lawful-use conditions separately.
    • Distinguish attributed conversions from incremental effect.

    Practical application

Select a concrete trigger, define the data basis, time window and exclusions, then check the complete delivery process. Test a useful message and evaluate its additional contribution.

    Useful measures

    Appropriate delivery

Check that segments, timing, product data and available exclusions match the planned communication.

    Incremental outcomes

Estimate additional purchases or qualified enquiries using a suitable comparison and report uncertainty.

    Full economics

Set media, discounts, creative, data maintenance and operation against the additional return.

    Common mistakes

    • Treating every visit as purchase intent or contact permission.
    • Recommending a fixed frequency regardless of offer and campaign type.
    • Presenting server-side data or high attribution as evidence of lawful use or incremental impact.
