Vector Search
Vector Search explained
Someone searching for “a laptop for a daily train commute” expresses a need rather than a product number. may retrieve descriptions about mobility or battery life. Requirements such as a particular port or price limit still need separate checks.
A search system may combine exact lookup for identifiers, vector similarity for different wording and filters for firm requirements. Such combinations are often called hybrid search. Compare them with actual tasks to determine what works better.
For knowledge assistants, retrieval can precede answer generation. It does not make the subsequent answer automatically accurate. Evaluate both stages: do results contain the required information, and does the answer use it correctly?
A practical starting point is to collect recurring questions, identify suitable results and add difficult counterexamples. Include similar product names, outdated versions and questions the collection cannot answer. This creates a useful test beyond a persuasive demonstration.
Examples
Hypothetical application
A test catalogue includes two products with similar names. A query explicitly requires the older version. The team checks whether search returns the correct documentation without preferring the newer, linguistically similar edition.
Key Points
- Judge similarity, requirements and evidence separately.
- Exact and semantic retrieval can complement each other.
- Test unanswered queries and plausible wrong matches.
Practical application
Compare search quality using documented typical and difficult questions before deployment.
Useful measures
Precision among displayed results
How many displayed results are relevant to the task?
Coverage of necessary information
Does the result list contain the required information?
Common mistakes
- Testing only successful demonstration queries.
- Treating a similarity threshold as a universal truth signal.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vector Search
Not generally. Product numbers and exact terms may need other methods. Evaluate combinations against the task.
No. Domain requirements, currency and permissions can make a mathematically similar result unsuitable.
No. Retrieval may supply useful sources, while a generated answer can still be unsupported or wrong.
