Conversational AI
Conversational AI explained
Start with a reason to converse, not a character that looks as human as possible. Which question should be answered, choice made easier or process prepared? Voice interaction also involves capabilities such as speech recognition and output. A useful flow accommodates misunderstandings, follow-up questions and a wish to switch to another form of interaction.
Separate conversation, knowledge and action. A system may estimate a request’s intent, retrieve information and formulate an answer. Whether it may also book an appointment or change data must be defined and implemented separately. A plausible confirmation is not evidence that an action succeeded.
Knowledge sources should be current and available for their purpose. Searching internal documents can ground answers but does not prevent every error. Check, for example, whether document conditions are conveyed in their proper context. A stored conversation is neither automatically a reliable knowledge source nor training of the model.
Creative Engineering designs helpful dialogue with a reliable conclusion. We take responsibility for the concept and quality. Show the automated nature and clear contact options. Test clarity, interruptions and completion in the actual channel. Count knowledge preparation, integration, checking and support; fluent answers alone establish neither quality nor economic value.
Examples
Hypothetical application
A training provider wants to make suitable courses easier to find. An assistant asks about topics and prior knowledge, explaining relevant offers from current course data. Users can switch directly to the course overview or the team. Registration counts as complete only after the confirmed booking process.
Key Points
- Design the reason to converse and task completion together.
- Distinguish language output, knowledge retrieval and action.
- Test quality in the actual channel.
Practical application
Define the conversational need and desired result. Establish knowledge, permitted actions and alternatives. Test dialogue and completion with typical and difficult requests.
Useful measures
Task success
Check whether users correctly reach the intended result.
Mutual understanding
Observe misunderstandings, helpful follow-ups and usable alternatives.
Operational quality
Record answer errors, confirmed actions, handovers and total effort.
Common mistakes
- Equating linguistic fluency with subject-matter understanding.
- Presenting document retrieval as complete protection from errors.
- Measuring conversation quality while overlooking failed actions.

Explanation of connected knowledge sources: they can reduce errors but do not eliminate them.
Frequently Asked Questions about Conversational AI
The terms overlap. A chatbot is a dialogue-like application; conversational AI describes possible AI methods behind it, including in voice assistants. A simple rule-based bot need not have the same capabilities.
No. An identifiable automated assistant can be clear and friendly. People should know who or what they are interacting with.
No. It needs an appropriate system connection and explicitly defined permissions. The actual change must be confirmed in a verifiable way.
