    Corporate Design (CD)

Corporate design is an organisation’s visual appearance and the design system behind it. It can include a logo, colours, typography, imagery and layout principles. It provides a shared framework whose recognisability and usability need to work in actual applications.

    Corporate Design (CD) explained

A useful system answers specific design questions: how is information organised, what remains legible at small sizes, and which elements connect a website, presentation and printed material? The solutions should have a recognisable character while making the clear.

Consistency does not mean identical layouts everywhere. A product overview needs different priorities from a poster. Define fixed features and deliberate flexibility. Assess readability, contrast, different languages and technical display limits early.

Corporate design is part of corporate identity. It can express an attitude visually but does not establish product quality or organisational behaviour. A new logo does not automatically make a brand familiar.

In Creative Engineering, the design idea includes a system teams can use: appropriate templates, available files and understandable rules. Assess the result through quality, recognition and effort to a usable application.

    Examples

    Hypothetical application

A company develops a shared system for its website, sales presentation and exhibition wall. Typography and imagery remain related while information density and composition fit each format. A pilot checks whether different teams can create clear, appropriate applications.

    Key Points

    • A visual system rather than a logo file alone.
    • Connect shared features with format-specific solutions.
    • Assess design in real applications.
    • Distinguish corporate identity from visual appearance.

    Practical application

Collect key applications and existing recognition cues. Develop and assess concepts against them, then translate the chosen direction into usable templates and guidance.

    Useful measures

    Recognition

Correct attribution of assessed applications to the brand.

    Usability

Readability and clear information hierarchy in relevant formats.

    Implementation effort

Work through an approved application, including corrections.

    Common mistakes

    • Assessing the identity through the logo alone.
    • Forcing one unchanged layout into every format.
    • Handing over an attractive sample without usable files and guidance.
