Embeddings
Embeddings explained
A search for “quick meat-free dinner” should find suitable recipes even when that exact phrase is absent from their titles. Text can bridge differences in wording. They do not provide a universal translation of meaning: similarity in a model does not guarantee a relevant result.
Domain context determines usefulness. Recipes need ingredient and preparation-time information; product documents need model numbers and version dates. Keep such facts available as checkable attributes. A similar text must not override an explicitly excluded ingredient or a required product version.
In Creative Engineering, embeddings could help a team explore a large asset archive. The benefit would be better selection for a specific creative task. Test that with typical queries and expert assessments before claiming time savings or revenue impact.
An existing embedding model is often a reasonable starting point for a test; custom training is not automatically required. Nor is a separate vector database essential: suitable search capabilities may be available within an existing database.
Examples
Hypothetical application
A team looks for imagery conveying “a quiet city morning”. It compares keyword and embedding search results. Editors assess atmosphere, usage rights and suitability for the planned format; a high similarity score does not decide the selection alone.
Key Points
- Numerical similarity depends on the model.
- Domain filters and evaluation belong in the workflow.
- Test quality with the actual archive and queries.
Practical application
Create a small set of typical search tasks and compare expert-rated results with the existing search.
Useful measures
Result relevance
Share of displayed results judged suitable for the task.
Time to a suitable selection
Include the actual selection and review process.
Common mistakes
- Equating similarity with truth or permission to use an asset.
- Combining a new model with incompatible stored vectors.

Frequently Asked Questions about Embeddings
They numerically represent learned relationships. That does not establish human understanding or general factual accuracy.
Generally not without checking compatibility. Queries and stored items need the intended compatible representation space. Changing models may require rebuilding representations.
Not necessarily. Scale, speed, filtering and existing infrastructure determine the appropriate storage and search approach.
